Why Dogs Need a Cool Down Day
Kodiak’s Blog
Hey, it’s Kodiak.
After the desert rescue of Bella and Bart, the whole Pack was exhausted.
Seriously exhausted.
We had crossed the desert, dealt with coyotes, stayed awake the whole day, and helped get Bella and Bart safely out of danger. By the time we got back to Cardiff Dog Park and the Cardiff Dog Rescue Center, even Terry stopped talking for like… almost two minutes.
Dash tried acting tough about it, but he passed out next to the water bowl the second he got home.
And me?
I was tired all the way down to my paws.
That’s when I realized something important:
Even the Cardiff Dog Pack needs a cool down day.
Dogs Get Worn Out Too
A lot of humans don’t realize dogs can get overheated, overstimulated, and exhausted just like people.
Big beach days, long hikes, dog parks, road trips, rescue missions, hot weather, too much excitement… it all adds up.
After the desert rescue, all any of us wanted was:
- water
- shade
- snacks
- naps
- belly rubs
- and absolutely no coyotes
Honestly, it was one of the best days we’d had in a while.
Signs Your Dog Needs a Cool Down Day
Here are a few signs your dog may need a recharge:
- sleeping more than usual
- heavy panting
- moving slower
- not wanting to play
- acting grumpy
- laying on cool floors
- wanting extra cuddles
- staring into space like they just survived a desert rescue mission
That last one was definitely Dash.
The Pack’s Favorite Recovery Gear
After the desert mission, here are a few things the Pack was glad to have around HQ:
EHEYCIGA Orthopedic Dog Bed
After walking on rocks and desert dirt, this thing felt like luxury.
Even Dash admitted it was comfortable. Quietly. When he thought nobody could hear him.
Zesty Paws 8-in-1 Multivitamin Bites
Kodiak approved.
After long adventures, the Pack likes having something that helps support joints, immune health, digestion, and recovery.
Terry mostly likes them because he thinks they’re treats.
Portable Travel Water Bottle & Food Holder
I REALLY wish we had brought one of these during the desert rescue.
You never know when you’re going to need water and a snack, especially on long adventures or hot days.
Trust me on this one.
Earth Rated Dog Wipes
Very important after desert rescues.
Sand, dirt, mystery smells, cactus dust… Steve somehow got all of it on him.
The wipes helped clean everybody up before nap time.
Hydration Matters
Dogs need more water than humans think, especially during warmer weather.
Bring water on walks.
Bring water to the beach.
Bring water on hikes.
And if you’re heading anywhere hot, always plan ahead.
The Pack rule is simple:
No dog should ever be stuck without water.
Recovery Is Part of Being Strong
The Pack believes courage matters.
But smart dogs recover too.
That means resting when you need rest. Cooling down when it’s hot. Taking care of your paws, joints, skin, and stomach.
Even rescue dogs need recovery days.
Especially rescue dogs.
Final Word From Kodiak
After we rescued Bella and Bart, the Pack learned something important.
Being strong doesn’t mean going nonstop.
Sometimes strength means resting, recovering, and getting ready for the next adventure.
The desert will still be there tomorrow.
Hopefully the coyotes won’t.
Blog at you later, Kodiak
