Beach Safety Tips From the Pack

Hey, it’s Kodiak.

I love the beach. I love the sand, the waves, the smells, the birds, the snacks people accidentally drop, and yes, even the part where my dad says, “Kodiak, don’t drink the ocean water.”

But here’s the thing about the beach.

It’s fun, but it can also get dangerous fast if dogs and humans aren’t paying attention. So before you hit the sand with your pack, here are a few beach safety tips from me, Kodiak, leader of the Cardiff Dog Pack.

Before your next beach day, check out some of the Pack’s favorite beach gear in the CDP Store:

1. Watch the Waves

Some dogs love charging straight into the water. I respect that. Bold move.

But waves can be stronger than they look, especially for smaller dogs, older dogs, or dogs who think they’re better swimmers than they actually are.

Start slow. Let your dog get used to the water. Stay close. And never assume your dog is safe just because they’re having fun.

The Pack always keeps safety first, especially near the ocean.

2. Swim Near Lifeguard Towers

This one matters.

If your dog is going in the ocean, stay near lifeguard towers whenever possible. Lifeguards know the water, the currents, and the danger spots.

The Pack rule is simple:

No one swims alone.

That goes for dogs and humans.

3. Be Careful With Rip Currents

Rip currents can pull swimmers away from shore. If that happens, don’t fight straight against it. Swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of the current, then head back in.

Dogs don’t understand rip currents, so it’s your job to keep an eye on them.

If the water looks rough, it’s okay to skip the swim and just enjoy the sand.

Trust me. Sand is underrated.

4. Bring Fresh Water

Ocean water is not a drink.

I know. I’ve tested it. Several times.

Bring fresh water and a bowl so your dog doesn’t get tempted to drink salty ocean water. Too much salt water can make dogs sick.

After beach adventures, Terry likes cooling off in the Jasonwell Foldable Dog Pool back at HQ.

5. Watch for Hot Sand

If the sand is too hot for your feet, it’s too hot for paws.

Try walking earlier in the morning or later in the day when the ground is cooler. Bring your dog into the shade when you can.

6. Use a Leash When Needed

Even good dogs can get excited at the beach.

Birds. Balls. Kids. Other dogs. Sandwiches.

A leash can keep your dog safe, especially around parking lots, crowded beaches, cliffs, waves, or dogs you don’t know.

Kodiak recommends the Ruffwear Roamer Bungee Dog Leash because it gives dogs freedom while helping humans stay in control.

7. Consider a Dog Life Jacket

Some dogs are strong swimmers. Some dogs are not. And even good swimmers can get tired.

A dog life jacket is a smart idea for beach days, boating, paddleboarding, or any water adventure.

The Pack believes in courage, but we also believe in being smart.

The Ruffwear Float Coat is one of the Pack’s favorite beach safety products and a must-have for rescue missions near the water.

8. Seaweed Is Not a Snack

Listen carefully.

Just because something smells interesting does not mean you should eat it.

That includes seaweed.

Some seaweed is harmless, but large amounts can upset your dog’s stomach, and certain kinds can actually expand inside a dog after being swallowed. Dead sea animals and weird mystery beach stuff are also officially banned by the Pack.

Dash says:

“If it smells suspicious, leave it.”

Probably good advice.

So keep an eye on your dog during beach walks and maybe trade questionable beach snacks for actual treats instead.

Trust me. The treat trade works almost every time.

9. Rinse Off After the Beach

Salt, sand, and ocean water can irritate your dog’s skin and paws.

After a beach day, rinse your dog with clean water and check their paws, ears, and coat.

Bonus tip: treats help with cooperation.

I’m just saying.

If your humans want to keep an eye on you after beach day, the TP-Link Tapo Dog Camera is one of the Pack’s favorite gadgets.

Final Word From Kodiak

The beach is one of the best places in the world, but the Pack always looks out for each other.

Have fun. Stay close. Bring water. Watch the waves. And remember:

No one goes into the water alone.
